Sustainability in Every Stitch

At Marine and Outdoor Upholstery, sustainability is part of everything we do.

How We Practice Sustainability

  • Minimising workshop waste

We sort and reuse off-cuts and foam where possible, and recycle fabrics, paper, and packaging materials.

  • Soft plastics are recycled responsibly

We collect clean soft plastics from our workshop and drop them at local recycling bins, where they're turned into products like fence posts.

  • Choosing eco‑conscious materials

We encourage using fabrics made from recycled ocean plastics and plastic bottles, combining durability with sustainability.

  • Repair-first mindset

When possible, instead of replacing, we recover and re-pad existing upholstery to extend its life and reduce waste.

Plastic Waste Recycling in NZ

Around 75% of Kiwis have access to soft plastic recycling drop-off points, but only 15% actually use them. At Marine and Outdoor Upholstery, we’re proud to be part of that 15%. We go the extra mile to clean, sort, and recycle soft plastics from our workshop, doing our bit to keep them out of landfill and protect Aotearoa’s environment.

What you can do to be more sustainable

Return Soft Plastics for Recycling

Always scrub and dry plastic wrap, bags, and film, then drop off at your local participating store.

Chose long-lasting, repairable goods

Opt for pieces you can re‑upholster or repair rather than discard.

Select materials consciously

Look for labels like ARL “Recycle at Store” or fabrics certified eco‑friendly or recycled.
